Why Aristotle Called It the Most Reliable Starting Point — And Musk Rediscovered It Through Battery Physics

In the Posterior Analytics, Aristotle described first principles as the foundational propositions from which all other knowledge in a domain is derived — those that cannot themselves be derived from anything more basic. He considered them the most reliable of all starting points precisely because they had been stripped of everything that could be wrong: inherited assumptions, conventional wisdom, surface analogy. This is the philosophical origin of what Elon Musk described in a 2013 TED interview as his approach to building SpaceX.

Musk recounted that when he first investigated rocket manufacturing, the conventional wisdom said it cost $65 million for a medium-lift rocket. He decomposed this from first principles: what are the actual material costs of a rocket? Carbon fibre, aluminium, titanium, copper, electronics. He looked up the spot prices. The materials cost, at commodity rates, was approximately 2 percent of the quoted price. He concluded that the markup represented manufacturing process inefficiencies, not physical necessity. SpaceX proceeded to build rockets for roughly a quarter of the industry price.

The Five-Step Protocol and Its Limits

Define the problem clearly enough to know what a solution would have to do. Identify every assumption you are carrying and ask which would survive direct empirical examination. Identify the irreducible physical, mathematical, or logical constraints on the solution space. Reconstruct the problem from those constraints upward, without reference to existing solutions. Evaluate existing solutions against your reconstruction rather than inheriting their logic. This protocol works best for problems with clear physical or mathematical constraints. It works less well for problems with irreducible human and social complexity, where the constraints are not physical laws but emergent properties of complex adaptive systems that cannot be reduced to axioms. Amazon's working backward methodology — starting with the press release of the ideal customer outcome and working backward to the product — is first principles thinking applied to product development and has generated AWS, Amazon Prime, and the Kindle.
