The Vagus Nerve Research That Changed the Direction of the Conversation
For most of the twentieth century, neuroscience treated gut-brain communication as a one-directional stress response pathway. The discovery that approximately 90 percent of vagal nerve fibre traffic is afferent — travelling from the gut to the brain rather than from the brain to the gut — inverted this assumption fundamentally. The enteric nervous system contains over 500 million neurons and produces approximately 95 percent of the body's serotonin. The gut serotonin system and the brain serotonin system are functionally separate, which means SSRIs primarily act on central serotonergic neurotransmission while the gut serotonin system operates independently.
The psychobiotics research — bacteria that produce mental health benefits when ingested, a term coined by Ted Dinan and John Cryan at University College Cork in 2013 — has produced genuinely interesting but preliminary clinical data. A 2019 meta-analysis by Simpson et al. across 34 controlled trials found that probiotic supplementation significantly reduced depression and anxiety scores with moderate effect sizes across both healthy participants and clinical populations. The heterogeneity across strains, dosages, and study populations makes species-specific recommendations premature.
Dietary Diversity as the Most Practical Intervention
The American Gut Project, with over 15,000 participants, found that the single dietary variable most predictive of microbiome diversity was the number of distinct plant species consumed per week. Participants eating 30 or more types of plants weekly had significantly more diverse microbiomes than those eating fewer than 10 types. Microbiome diversity correlates with lower inflammatory markers and more stable mood outcomes across multiple cohort studies. The specific fibre types in leeks, onions, and garlic selectively promote Bifidobacterium populations that produce short-chain fatty acids which cross the gut-brain barrier and influence inflammatory tone in the central nervous system. The practical recommendation is wide dietary variety rather than concentrated probiotic supplements.
