The dominant popular framing of stress positions it as an enemy to be eliminated. This framing, while emotionally resonant, is neurologically incorrect and practically counterproductive. The problem is not cortisol itself but the mismatch between the threat environments cortisol was designed for — physical, acute, resolvable — and those of modern life — psychological, chronic, non-resolvable. Social connection — Holt-Lunstad's meta-analysis of 148 studies found adequate social relationships increased survival probability by 50 percent. MBSR mindfulness-based stress reduction produced a mean cortisol area-under-the-curve reduction of 0.19 standard deviations in the 2019 Creswell meta-analysis. Adequate sleep — below 6 hours per night produces the cortisol dynamics of significant psychological stress even in otherwise healthy individuals.
